Highlights & Plans

Highlights for 2018-19

We began the year with a delightful community sponsorship with the Highline Schools Foundation and Comcast. They donated personal computers to every fifth- and sixth-grade student at Beverly Park. The surprise was launched by a media event and motivating assembly with the Olympic gold medal winners, the Lamoureux sisters, encouraging students to persevere and work hard toward their goals.

We also  implemented Positive Behavior Supports and RULER to address student’s social and emotional well being at school. Teachers and staff promoted positive, respectful interactions to encourage a sense of belonging in a positive learning community. Teachers implemented research based restorative practices in their class meetings to foster respectful relationships, agreements, routines and student-centered problem solving.

We continued to monitor daily attendance and encourage students and families to regularly attend school. Students were recognized for their attendance efforts. Research confirms that regular school attendance directly affects long term student success.

We celebrated strong community partnerships alongside our PTA, which sponsors monthly Family Fun Nights to promote family connections. Families enjoy community potlucks, literacy and math celebrations, and Family Fitness Night.

Reading Partners, a well-established program at Beverly Park, was showcased to the Seattle media for its impact in supporting young readers. Reading Partners is a community-based volunteer tutoring program supporting striving readers in grades K-4. This last year more than 53 community volunteers spent time twice weekly reading and supporting 63 students to improve their love for reading!

Students participated in school and community before and after school clubs including Soccer for Success, Performing Arts Club, Music/Choir, Basketball, Girls on the Run and after school tutoring.

Students participated in the district sponsored Mathletes competition and Beverly Park fared well receiving several medals and placed 8th overall in the competition. We believe healthy competition is an exciting experience for all students

The Highline Schools Foundation sponsored Beverly Park with shoe donations in every size and color through their Kicks for Kids program!

Plans for 2019-20

  • We will continue to focus on grade-level and team collaboration to improve instruction and student mastery of the Common Core State Learning Standards. Teachers will use formative assessment and multiple sources of data to help students acquire mastery of rigorous core subject material.
  • Teachers and staff continue to study and align the Common Core standards to ensure that students receive the full range of knowledge and skills that are explicitly integrated into their daily standards based activities, assessments, materials, curriculum and instruction in all their learning environments.
  • We will design literacy and language arts instruction to provide students with learning opportunities to emphasize reading, writing, speaking/listening and language development to build the foundational learning all students need to succeed.
  • Students will read to learn about the global world around them, and for the sheer joy of enjoying and discussing stories.
  • Our math instruction will focus on real-world problem solving using newly adopted math curriculum aligned to the Common Core Standards and most current and relevant mathematical practices.
  • Students will respond to instruction by performing learning tasks responding to varying demands of audience, task, purpose and discipline. They will learn to comprehend as well as critique, value evidence in written work, learn to demonstrate independence and stamina to work hard, and come to value and understand other perspectives and cultures.
  • We will continue to offer after-school activities to promote the whole child including Soccer for Success, Mathletes, Performing Arts Club and Music Club.
  • We will continue to use technology and digital media strategically and capably to make teaching and learning more effective.
  • We will cultivate and nurture effective partnerships with families and community to strengthen the ties needed for improving student achievement through school to home learning.
